JeZ+Lee's "GT-R Twin Turbo" 3.0 Game Engine Test...
Hi, My team and I are finishing up a new version of our SDL1.2+OpenGL cross-platform open-source 2-D game engine called: "GT-R Twin Turbo"! Current build is tested and working on the following OS's: - Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 7 Home Premium 64Bit SP1 - Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Professional 32Bit SP3 - Ubuntu 11.04 64Bit Was hoping some people could try the game engine demo? Just let us know if it works OK and what OS you are using, thanks! You can download the current build here: http://16bitsoft.com/files/CT/alpha/CT_Alpha-15.zip (contains both Windows(R) and Linux versions - Linux makefile included to build) CHANGE LOG: Alpha-15: - [START!] button does something now (Moveable player ship and flying astoroids- no bullets/collisions yet) Alpha-07: - Improved drawing performance for older computers. Couldn't test it, as it just kept scrolling through the menu options automatically.

Hi Barry,
Thanks for testing on your Ubuntu 11.04 64Bit OS. Runs fine on my Ubuntu 11.04 64Bit. I'll see if I can reproduce your problem on my end and try to fix it. Thanks! JeZ+Lee 16BitSoft(R) Video Game Design Studio www.16BitSoft.com On 9/15/2011 9:53 AM, Alex Barry wrote:

Also, when I pressed escape to quit it, I got a segfault, so I looked into it and it seems that it's trying to setup a joystick when I don't have one present.

Hi,
It runs ok on my test computer running native Ubuntu 11.04 64Bit, but when running the demo on Windows(R) 7 HP 64Bit SP1 host with Ubuntu 11.04 64Bit guest VirtualBox virtual machine the problem is there. Are you running Ubuntu 11.04 64Bit natively or in a virtual machine? Seems like on virtual machine, the engine tries to configure a USB joystick when none is present? I'll fix it now, thanks for your help! JeZ+Lee 16BitSoft(R) Video Game Design Studio www.16BitSoft.com On 9/15/2011 10:00 AM, Alex Barry wrote:

Perhaps you have an accelerometer that the game is grabbing?

Thank you for testing on your very old computer. I tried the demo on the following and it ran well: - Ubuntu 11.04 32Bit - AMD Duron 1.2GHz - 768MB DDR RAM - GeForce 5200 256MB AGP 4X (a system from 2002 mind you) Well, not sure what I can do to make the game demo run faster on your system. (if you have any performance increasing suggestions then let me know!) And yes there is no game yet, this was a test of the game framework/engine/core. (code that draws images, plays sound, gets input, etc) Thanks again for testing... |

Hi,
I had neglected to mention that your previous (T-Crisis, Pac Dude Hero and Lettersfall) ran effortlessly on this system. I don't know what changes you've made. Not that I'm expecting you to support an old system, but others may notice a slowdown as well. I would also like to correct some info: I stated it was Squeeze x64 which isn't possible, its 32 bit. From what I see there is no game, so I don't know what else I'm testing other than menus (makes it hard to truly test the game engine, no?). Hi, Thank you for testing on your very old computer. I think I understand why the old 3 games ran ok and new one does not: I was never happy with the power of 2 dimensions requirement for images using OpenGL, so I redid my the graphics core to allow loading images of any size into OGL textures. As a result, all the textures are now 1024x1024 regardless of original size. (I load PNG image into SDL surface, then place it on a 1024x1024 SDL surface before copying to OGL texture) I guess I can optimize the above - for example the button sprites do not need a 1024x1024 size - 256x64 would work fine. |

http://www.opengl.org/wiki/NPOT_Texture That is, in most cases, you can just upload the textures in their actual size and be done with it. If you're having issues with mipmapping, and/or need to support older hardware, you can round texture size up to the nearest power-of-two, and adjust the texture coordinates accordingly. -- //David Olofson - Consultant, Developer, Artist, Open Source Advocate .--- Games, examples, libraries, scripting, sound, music, graphics ---. | http://consulting.olofson.net http://olofsonarcade.com | '---------------------------------------------------------------------' _______________________________________________ SDL mailing list http://lists.libsdl.org/listinfo.cgi/sdl-libsdl.org |

Thanks for the info. I do want the game to run on older computers so I will implement next power of 2 dimensions for the textures. (doing this now) Good luck the sequel to your space game. Played the original a while ago and it was impressive. New version looks great. Thanks again. OK,
I've redone the graphics core and now it should be faster on older computers. You can download the Alpha-07 here: http://forums.libsdl.org/viewtopic.php?t=7532 Thanks to all that have participated... |

Hi,
Work on our new SDL1.2+OGL game engine is about done. We have started working on the actual game now( [START!] button ). Game will be based on 1980's arcade game: "Asteroids". (might be multi-player too, but not decided yet) Check out our progress here: http://forums.libsdl.org/viewtopic.php?t=7532 Thanks to all that have helped! Amazing Screenshot: |

Nope, I don't have any accelerometer hooked up to my laptop, unless it has has secret one built in (extremely unlikely).
