I've added a preview of a software renderer to bugzilla. Link:

This is unfinished, untested, and has minimal refactoring, as can be
seen from the code. I have an email in the moderation queue with older
versions of the files involved. It's in the form of a tar because
uploading all of the files individually seemed like just a nuisance.

Looking for comments, and pixel read/write code.
