Serious congrats.  Everyone needs a great programmer!  Though it's sad that you had to leave us in the Boston area.

Awesome news. I hear Valve is great to work for.

Maybe you could pull some strings to get Valve to get them to back a certain open source project. Very Happy

From reading the Valve handbook (which they recently released,
incidentally), Valve employees are extremely self-managed (to the
extent of choosing their own projects). To paraphrase the manual, this
requires very careful selection of employees.

But yeah, Sam helping with the Linux port does seem kinda obvious (I
foresee a lot of Steam devs adopting SDL/SDL2 to make cross-platform
easier).

Congrats to Sam too :-)

Good for Valve... at least they seem to be run by a sane management.

Jeri Ellsworth is also at Valve these days...

Dear Sam,

Congratulations. And also please don't forget that you got this job due to your baby SDL. It will give you further financial surprises in future, this is just the beginning.

Therefore, don't forget your baby SDL, please work on it whenever you get time. Taking rest is also very important for serious and innovative work.

Try to get Value financial support for the SDL to make it a shining star.

Best regards
Unga

Actually, the manual seems to imply that they don't have actual
management. When it said that they had to be careful about who they
hired, I believed it (I've worked with a variety of people that I
wouldn't hire into a management-free environment, even if I would
trust them in a restricted-management environment).

Thanks!

They really do operate the way they say they do, so I expect my first few weeks to be learning a lot about a bunch of different projects and trying to find the place I can help the most.
